I've no idea but WOW that's fantastic.  Sitting here green with envy you are so lucky.  Have loads of fun exploring.
Thanks Trish, I've always wanted to go there...I have books to go over but, wanted others' input....never know where you'll pick up a gem of an idea!
I live in Quebec and it is very rich in culture and quite different in all its different regions. If you are driving to Nova Scotia try to stop for a day or two in Quebec city. Have fun.
Yes, Quebec City, definitely, maybe 3 nights we'll be there.  Part of the fun of planning a trip is to read about the history of where you are going...I will be doing some reading!  Maybe bring my tree along...I like the idea of walking where my ancestors lived.  Are there areas north of there we should see?  We are coming from California.  I am sure it will be views of varied landscapes...I'm kind of like a dog with it's head out the window!

Looking forward to it!

Well, I spent three weeks traveling through there several years ago.  We drove through New Brunswick and then down to Halifax and along the south coast.  We loved Lunenberg.  We also went up to Annapolis Royal and Digby (huge tides!) and took a ferry across to Saint John, NB from there.  Definitely recommend you get up there.  If you love seafood, it doesn't get any fresher than up there.  I don't think you can go wrong.  And while I'm extremely partial to British Columbia, Nova Scotia is one of my favorite 'other' provinces in Canada!  You'll love it and can't go wrong!  Enjoy!

We have been to BC several times over the years.  I think it is one of the most beautiful places on earth.  Luckily, we have friends who live there.  I'm writing down the places you mentioned.  Thank you for that!  Besides Fr. Canadian's in my tree, we also have Irish but, I am not positive where they landed in Canada.  I have time to investigate more!

Depends on your interests and how much time you want to spend in one place. We did a road trip to the Maritimes around that time of year but had much less time than you do (we only had 13 days round trip out of the Toronto area, and first detoured down to Connecticut to visit friends before following the coast up.) While it is 'off the route' from Quebec to Nova Scotia I have included some things from PEI as well.

If you are looking for 'nature'-stuff, while you are driving through New Brunswick it's not too far out of the way to take a day and see the Hopewell Rocks (if you can be there for both high and low tide all the better). The Cabot Trail on Cape Breton is also great; in addition to breath-taking overlooks it also has lots of hiking trails of different difficulties. About halfway through the trail we also did a whale watching tour out of Bay St. Lawrence (they even allowed our puppy on board.)

If you are looking for adventure activities I can definitely recommend Deepelling with Open Sky Adventures in Fall River, New Brunswick just off the Trans Canada Highway. Tidal Bore rafting on the Shubenacadie River is one of those 'once in a lifetime' things-to-do (We were very happy, although exhausted, with the 4 hour 'extreme tide' tour from Tidal Bore rafting parks and cottages)

It would be impossible to list all the historical places to see, but touring Old Quebec City for a few days and a day at Louisbourg are tops on my list of 'military history' - and probably also the top of 'general' history.

For Acadian history Grand Pré should probably make the list and you might also consider PEI's North Cape Coastal Drive.

Cape Breton also lived up to it's advertising as "the Celtic Heart of North America"

As with historical places, there are far too many scenic places to list, but I think Lunenberg and Cavendish, the inspiration for Anne of Green Gables and also home to PEI National Park are on the 'must see' list - (Note: if you do plan to go to PEI I recommend scheduling it after Cape Breton and taking the Ferry out of Caribou, NS then driving the Confederation bridge from PEI back into New Brunswick).

A few other miscellaenous items: walking some of the famous stairs of Quebec City, or taking the Funiculaire de Vieux-Québec. I doubt St. Stephen, NB is anywhere close to your planned route (unless you are also dodging through Maine) but I'll mention the Ganong Chocolate Museum in case that interests you.

I also meant to include the Glooscap Heritage Centre to hit on aboriginal history.

Also, while Eskasoni Cultural Journeys didn't fit our schedule, so I can't 'recommend' it, it was something we were interested in so I thought I would mention it. (unfortunately it also requires large groups but often venues like this will try and put together a group from smaller groups that contact them)

Rob, thanks for being so thorough! I am writing down some of the names of towns where my family lived so as we travel through the area it will bring more meaning...associating surnames with places and what happened where.....at this point I'm not even sure how much territory we can cover!  My husband is doing all the driving so, I have to figure out the definite places we want to see and get to within a time frame.

So, I appreciate your taking the time to add your suggestions...every bit helps!
