I have Arnold-Chiari malformation ACM.  I am 35 now, i have till i am 47, till i die.  2 of my kids were kidnaped years ago, they are now back in my life. I am concerned they may have ACM also.  My mother june ann gibbs had it and died from it also. The doctors say it may be congenital or hereditary.  I do not have anymore info then what i have given.  I want to know who else in my family may have had acm. Where did it come from. I know theres not much to go on but. I want to have info for my kids befor i die. I dont know why, i hope it will help them latter on in life, if they need or want it.

You are right - medical information is the most difficult to locate.  I have had some success looking at death certificates, since they list cause of death and sometimes other contributory illnesses.  Older obituaries, cemetery records, and funeral home records occasionally list the cause of death, so these could be alternative sources for you.

You will need the names, dates of death, and state where the person died to get the death records. If your mother is still alive, you may want to get information from her, or perhaps you can get information from another close relative.  Maybe someone has a copy of the obituaries?

According to the New Jersey Dept. of Health page on Vital Records, the state began keeping death records as early as May 1848.  You may want to read the information on their web site about how to obtain the records you need.
