Samuel Smith Lane I (1819-1902) was born in Ghent, in Herkimer County, NY. He married Louiza (Simons) Lane. Samuel I is buried in Friendship, NY.

It is presumed that his parents were probably named Samuel and Abigail, but this info may be wrong. A memory of a daughter, of Samuel & Louiza, is that "both of her grandmother's names were Abigail". It is also possible that his mother's last name may have been Smith, and may be buried in either Michigan or New York States. If anyone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

www.nyshistoricnewspapers.org has recently begun to list digitized Herkimer County newspapers.  They were not available a year ago when I looked for them.  There is  presently nothing for Samuel Lane but they may still expand their selection as time goes on.  File the URL and check back once in a while.

Thank you.

Here is a likely listing in the NY State 1865 census:

"New York State Census, 1865," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVNF-KJTX : accessed 22 March 2016), Samuel S Lane in household of Samuel Lane, , , , New York, United States; citing source p. 2, line 26, household ID 12, State Library, Albany; FHL microfilm 501,955.

What if Samuel Smith Lane the elder was born in YATES County as it lists here?  Can tracing other children help you?

Good luck! -NGP

I did make one error, it was his son, Samuel Smith Lane II, that was buried in Friendship, NY. For that, I apologize. I guess, that happens with family names being alike. I don't have a death place for Samuel Smith Lane I.

The census record you found was for Samuel Smith Lane I and his son, Samuel Smith Lane II. I have family records of the siblings of Samuel Smith Lane II, but none of the siblings for his father, Samuel Smith Lane I. I have found the grave site for Samuel Smith Lane II, but not for his father, Samuel Smith Lane I. I haven't found any census records for the parents of Samuel Smith Lane I though, and I don't know whether Samuel Smith Lane I had any siblings or not. The family records end at Samuel Smith Lane I.
