When birthdates are unknown, is there a standard entry to hold the place until correct information can be found?

I have a document, compiled my my aunt a few years ago for a cousins' reunion. Her information is pulled from a book published by a distant cousin and self-proclaimed expert on the Brantley family. While entering individuals into Wikitree, a birth and death date, however vague, is required. It doesn't accept UNKNOWN as a choice. What I have been doing is enetering the mother's birth date as the child's birth and death year, with 'AFTER this date' checked. Clearly a child isn't going to be born the same year as their mother, but it gives a general idea what time frame that child was born, rather than it potentially being any one of a hundred people with that similar name (my father's side LOVES the name William).

Is there a clear or standard procedure in these cases?

Thank you!

only one is required, a birth or death date.

I would put that the birth date is to be determined or just unknown, if you know roughly when they were born you can put down that they were born about this time .

hope this is of use to you

I estimate the date of birth based upon

1) 20 years after the mother's birth

2) the wedding date

3) 25 years after the father's birth

4) 20 years before the birth of their first child.

and I note that (one of the above) in the birthguess statement.

{{DateGuess2}}
This birth date is speculative, based upon 25 years after the father's birth

Like Elaine said, if you can make a reasonable guess on the birth or death date, please do so.

If the mother was born in 1725, it's not real helpful to guess that the child was born "after 1725," because we know that the birth was a good bit later than 1725. A date like "about 1745" or "about 1750" would a lot more reasonable -- and makes it more likely that someone looking for this person will find the profile.

Also, add the template {{DateGuess|Birth}} to the top of the text section of the profile to alert others to the fact that you were guessing.
