What is a hatnote? When is it used? Examples?

I saw the term hatnote mentioned in a policy discussion -- I was surprised I had not encountered it before, but I didnt want to distract from the topic of that thread.

I created the template as I find its something you use on a wiki. See family search genealogy wiki on the subject
