My ancestor list shows people only back five generations (great-great-grandparents). How do I add people from earlier generations?

I'm sure you will get great replies here in G2G.

You can also contact a WikiTree Mentor for assistance.  They are volunteers who help people learn the ropes of basic genealogy and WikiTree-ing.

Something to start you on the right path for sure is to investigate Sources and how to use them in discovering more ancestors.

FamilySearch is a great resource where you can find many free records to use as Sources.

If you want to find names of ancestors who are six generations back, you could post the info that you have on those who are five generations back. Include a question requesting the names of the parents.

That's great William, I'm glad you found what you were looking for.  That will then show you George Cooper who is the one that is 6 generations back.

If you still wish to "add people from earlier generations" you can use Sources as I described (they need to be added to each profile as they are created or information is added), and you can find help with research here in G2G like Frank described.

Hi, William!

If you click the Edit tab on any profile, you will see links to add family members all along the right side of the edit screen. Clicking one of these will open a new window where you can start adding information for that new person. Once you create their profile, you'll be presented with another screen that will allow you to choose a link to easily add another family member.

Hi

Do you have access to a genealogy site, they store a lot of records, I found that findmypast is great otherwise you can find the record office that would store records of your family, another sourse that I find useful are online parish clerks I know they are in Britain not sure about other countrys.

I have also visited churches to see what records they have and to check out headstones billiongraves.com can help with that.

Thanks, Elaine. I have the info back many gens, so it was just a question of how to enter the data for earlier gens into my wiki tree. I`ve figured it out now. Thanks again. :)

I see you've been busy adding ancestors. Don't forget to go back and add content in the text sections of the profiles to document the sources for your information -- and tell more about their lives.

Hi William - Welcome - Glad you figured it out - additional tip for you.

Once you get to the "end of your ancestors" and want to add more; be sure to check existing family name to see if already in Wiki, and then just "attach the existing profile" rather than creating a new one.  You can find a family list (or check for duplicates in a family - use first/last name) by going to upper search box and putting in the Last Name only (for entire family), then resort this list by "birth"  (also can be found on upper RH menu; Find People).
