It is to show that the bearer understands the naming conventions and how to check for pre-existing profiles to minimize the creation of duplicates.

Those with the Pre-1700 badge can create and edit profiles with dates between 1500 and 1700.

It signifies you have read the info here on working on pre-1700 ancestors, have taken the little quiz, and by doing so, confirm you will your best to adhere to the guid-lines set for persons born, residing or passed away pre-1700. This would include proper sourcing, and checking for dupes to limit the number of 'Richard Warren, Mayflower Passenger' entries to the one true and communally worked on person.
