Birthplace/parents of Christie Mackay, 1812, emigrated Nova Scotia, married George William Hume?

Hi there,

I am an Australian great, great grand daughter of Christie Mackay, born Scotland about 1812.  Christie's eldest son John Calvin Hume emigrated to Australia in 1860. His Australian marriage record lists her name as Christie Mackay. Another of Christie's sons was Peter Hume whose family history is recorded on the Oregon Republican site, including Christie's name as Christina Annie Isabella Mackay.

I cannot find her Mackay family origins and believe her father's name was Donald from our Australian family history. Although Christie does appear on the IGI the Stornoway birthdate and place listed are incorrect, according to the Stornoway historical society which have no records of her birth.  From US Census and territorial records I found, as a widow, she emigrated to Olympia, Thurston Washington and lived with her youngest daughter Maggie Yantis nee Hume.

From all the many Mackay families in Nova Scotia, she does not appear to fit into any I have found. I was told her father was 'mad' Donald Mackay but family history records of known descendants state that his Scottish daughters did not go with him to Nova Scotia. Nor have I found any records to substantiate which Mackay family she was from.

Hoping very much to find the Mackay family of which Christie was part.

Kind regards,

Louise Parker

I have done a google search for Donald mad MacKay- I didn't research it too much but I did find a couple of links, you might find some answers:

Also, as you are probably aware- MacKay and McKay are interchangeable with the Family History..

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/METISGEN/2003-02/1045599084  There is Reference to a Christy MacKay B.After 1771

Also a Google Search with John Calvin Hume Chrisitie MacKay- which I had found another inquiry you were making:

P.S.  a handy tool in Searching Documents is to open a Search box, and enter a word, or name, etc.
"Press CTRL and Hold it Down and press F" and a Search Box will open at the top of the page for you to enter a Word:
IE: mad, Christie, Donald, etc.

I hope this will help!

Best Regards,

Darren

"Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," database, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XBSH-2RN : accessed 29 March 2016), Christy Mackay, 07 Nov 1803; citing PORTREE,INVERNESS,SCOTLAND, reference ; FHL microfilm 990,671.

Born 1803 but father was Donald - possibility, maybe.

"Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," database, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X18L-3ZR : accessed 29 March 2016), Christy Mackay, 20 Mar 1819; citing CREICH,SUTHERLAND,SCOTLAND, reference ; FHL microfilm 990,561.

Born 1819, and mother was a McDonald.

"Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," database, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XT56-DHW : accessed 29 March 2016), Christian Mackay, 04 Apr 1813; citing Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, reference 2:18KL3NG; FHL microfilm 1,066,688.

Christian is a girl, born 1813 - mother is a McDonald

Lots more if you extend beyond the "Donald" reference, but it could be hard to narrow it down.

Here's a couple more with Donald Mackay as father:

"Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," database, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQQT-2V5 : accessed 29 March 2016), Hector Christina Mac Kay, 04 Nov 1811; citing DURNESS,SUTHERLAND,SCOTLAND, reference ; FHL microfilm 990,562.

"Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," database, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQQ1-Z26 : accessed 29 March 2016), Christian Mac Kay, 14 Jan 1813; citing , reference ; FHL microfilm 990,580.

Good luck.

Hi Scott,

I have looked at all your suggestions and many other birth records from Scotlands people trying to link with Nova Scotian Mackay trees on  Ancestry but no luck yet. Suspect her name at birth was not even Christie/Christian etc.

thanks so much,

will keep trying

cheers Louise

Hi Louise,

I am helping my friend Pat McArthur with Hume research,  Pat's husband was Keith Norman McArthur, and his mother Ada was a daughter of John Calvin Hume.  I have found info of John Calvin Hume.

Hi Beryl,
Have been in touch with family who prefer anonymity so if you could remove the names that would be appreciated.

Thanks
Delighted to get your message.  Phoned her but she is out today.  She does not use a computer..
