G2G: Adding Sources

I'm very new at researching my genealogy.   I've mostly found my information as a guest member of Ancestry.com and also visiting the local National Archives office.  When I found something that matched, I'd either download it or copy and paste it.  I never knew to retain the sources.

I see there is a spot on the various Profile pages where I should add a source.   How do I do that when I'm no longer certain of whether I got the info from Ancestry or the Archives?

Thanks....Loretta McGInn

Do the best you can, Loretta.

At a minimum, you could add a bullet at the end (under sources) that says

"* Unless otherwise noted, information from the personal research of [[McDermott-880|Loretta McGinn]]."

Thanks so much for your response, Jillaine.  This is a great way to start and something I can do.  I appreciate your help.

One think I think beginners should do is browse to various profiles of other people and see how they do things.  You don't need to change them but you might want to copy them to either a profile you're using as your test bed or to a document on your computer and then play around and try changing things until you've figured things out; asking questions here in g2g as needed.  And when you go to Ancestry or other sites, figure out where you need to go to find a citation that you can copy.  This way you don't need to copy a document to WikiTree and worry about copyrights or anything.  Though I do copy images to my own offline trees for safekeeping.
