Her Death Certificate shows that she was born on 20 March 1840, the daughter of J. D. Smith, b. Pennsylvania, and Martha Jane Smith, b. Ohio.  The informant on the Death Certificate was Jessee Ross.("Ohio Deaths, 1908-1953," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-21234-6692-31?cc=1307272 : accessed 30 March 2016), 1913 > 28651-31500 > image 1593 of 3293. Certificate 30051)  I definitely think the name of her mother is incorrect.

The 1880 US Census shows Sylvester Ross, 50, and his wife Martha J., 37, were living in Union District, Pleasants County, West Virginia, with nine children.  Father-in-law Danl. J. Smith, 77 b. PA, and mother-in-law Sarah Smith, 77 b. MD, were living with the family. (Isaac Smith, 53 b. PA, and his family, were also enumerated on the page.)("United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M6TQ-74Q : accessed 30 March 2016), Sylvester Ross, Union, Pleasants, West Virginia, United States; citing ED 177, sheet 139B, Household ID 13095352, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 1411; FHL microfilm 1,255,411.)

In 1850 in the town of Clarington, Salem Twp., Monroe, Ohio, J. D. Smith, 47 b. PA, lived with Sarah, 47 b. MD, and 4 Smith children including 6 year old Martha. The children were born in PA, VA and Ohio.("United States Census, 1850," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MX37-ZL3 : accessed 30 March 2016), J D Smith, Salem, Monroe, Ohio, United States; citing family 174, NARA microfilm publication M432 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).)

In 1860, J. Daniel Smith, 56 b. PA, lived in Marshall County, Virginia (later West Virginia), Post Office Woodland, with Sarah Smith, 56 b. MD, and 3 Smith children, including 17 year old Martha J. Smith, and 3 year old Emma J. Hamilton.  All the children were born in Ohio.("United States Census, 1860", database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M41D-LS4 : accessed 30 March 2016), J Daniel Smith, 1860. Page 22, Household 144)

FindAGrave shows that J. Daniel Smith died on 1 Jan 1804 in Pleasants County, West Virginia.(Find A Grave Memorial# 27180030; Created by: Robin Ellison;Record added: May 29, 2008; FindAGrave.)  The FindAGrave memorial for Martha shows that her mother was Sarah Elizabeth Saltkill. There is a marriage on 23 June 1821 in Frederick County, MD, for a Daniel Smith and Sarah Saltkill.(Dodd, Jordan, Liahona Research, comp.. Maryland Marriages, 1655-1850 [Ancestry database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2004.)  This marriage date fits with the ages of their children.
