In both the 1871 & 1881 Census John is listed as John William Barker born 1855 Normanby, first as a servant in Whitton, Co Durham then wife Margaret, living in Great Ayton, where John was a ironstone miner. Ther marriage was registered in Stokesley in 1880 (Stockesley 9d/781 q September 1880) John William Barker & Margaret Ann Sewell. In 1891 the family were in Sleetburn, whilst John was lodging in Skelton in Cleveland in the 1901 Census and described as a widower & a deputy mining manager.

Whilst there are a number of Normanby's in Yorkshire, the Normanby/EstonGreat Ayton//Skelton connection to ironstone mining is the most likely. John William Barker's birth was registered in Guisborough in 1854 (Guisborough 9d/408 q June 1854), whilst his christening was conducted on 29 April 1854, Eston, Yorkshire, the son of Robert Barker & Elizabeth.
