DNA ethnicity and cousins

+10 votes
I have taken a Ancestry DNA test and my closest cousin is 4th-6th genarations distant.

Unfortunatelly, he isn't that far on his research, but we have an unique family combination.

I have among my Great-Grand-Parents 2 Italian, 5 Spanisch and only one NativeSouthAmerican ancestor.

On the other hand he has 4 SouthAmerican, 3 Portuguese and only one one Italian Great-Grand-Parent.

Is it possible to know if our match meets on any of these common origins?

In our case, the Italian or the SouthAmerican line?

Thank you for your comments!!!

It is possible if you are both in GEDmatch

See for example the shared Amerindian segment from six to seven million:

Those two people share that segment and part of that segment is of Amerindian origin.

Thank you! I will try this when my cousin uploads his DNA to GedMatch!
Hi Peter!

We share Chromossome 19, so there is no ancestry on the Amerindian side. Do I understand it correctly like this?

kits: A283826 & A686163.

Hello Regis,

See https://flic.kr/p/Gm5WCv

On chromosome 19, the portion you both share from 2 to 3 million is Amerindian.

Are you both in WikiTree?

He is only on FamilySearch.

I am trying to research his family, but as all native american, it is going to be difficult goal to reach.

Thank you so much for your help!

Of course it depends on how your ggps are being classified as Native or Spanish or Portuguese.  Everybody was mixed, except recent immigrants.  Ethnic classification is often based on arbitrary factors.

Everybody thinks Bonnie Prince Charlie was Scottish, but he had very little Scottish blood.
