Working on unrelated lines.

There seems to be a general feeling that just because you are the profile manager for a profile then you are either related to them or know a great deal about them. Sadly in my case this is not always true.  I will work on profiles where the LNAB  is the same as someone in my line or even some who are related by marriage but if I find any information that I am sure is for that person I always add it to the profile. Am I wrong in working on those profiles and should I abandon them or keep trying to make them the best profiles I can?

Keep working on them!

I view the Profile Manager as the person who has the best chance of discerning between differing sources.  You have worked on person A, whether you are related or not, and you have looked at the source information as a whole.

When someone else comes in with a new source, the profile manager is the one who can give the soundest judgement or ask the best questions to further the profile building. Though mistakes can be made since we are human, but that is why we collaborate/work together.

But, you are right, in that, there is a possessiveness that some attach to or foist upon the profile manager.  All you can do is be as true to the profile as you can which is the important thing.

I do approve any trusted list requests for relatives who want it and even most times make them, at least, a manager as well.

I can't speak for anybody else, but when somebody finds a source or a link for any of the profiles I manage, I'm delighted! There's a guy who has really taken an interest in a family tree I put up which starts from a family with the same last name as me, but to whom I have yet to find a family connection. He turns up the most amazing sources. (And sometimes funny: he dug up a report on a family wedding, presumably from the society pages, which went into incredible detail about the bride's dress, the bridesmaids' dresses, the bride's mother's dress, the decorations, the flowers... but forgot to mention who was actually getting married!)
