How do I automatically separate first and second names?

Well, to enter a profile on WikiTree you have to enter given, middle and surnames separately But even looking at a name you can't be certain that you've separated a name completely correctly.  Mary Ann or Maryanne can be found in separate records for the same person.  And is Van Lopez actually Van NMN Lopez or Unknown Van-Lopez or Unknown Van_Lopez  If you're talking a GED, the  database it comes from will probably have rules as to how it stores parts of a name, and will presumably expoar the GED accordingly.  So any attempt to automate the process is subject to error.

My names came from a GED file. The 1st and 2nd names are merely separated by a space. Sounds like a useful default. I could correct any deviations manually, but not the majority. Can I write an algorithm? (I used to be a programmer.)
