Seeking a connection with Walter Phelps of Maryland

+7 votes
I can make a connection between my father and Richard Phelps of Ohio, 1785-1868. DNA tells me that the ydna for the family descends from Walter Phelps who immigrated to Anne Arundel County, Maryland but I am uncertain about the intervening generations. I think it might be Walter, Walter, Bazil, Edward, Richard but I am not sure and certainly am not close to proving it. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Leila, I'm only 6 years late here. I can confirm your generations of Walter, Walter, Basil and Edward, but I can't find Richard as a son of Edward, and there are copies of Edward's will from 1796 in North Carolina on Ancestry. There are several Phelps that I cannot place confidently in my tree. It's a difficult family, there are so many of them.

Hi Chip, how confident are you that the will for the Edward Phelps in NC is the son of Basil? There is a Richard & Edward Phelps that get married in Montgomery County, MD. Edward in 1807 & Richard in 1809. They then move to OH. They are both in 1850 US Census at Enoch, Monroe, Ohio, USA.
I am not confident at all. I was trying to answer the preceding question, and I had the Phelps line down to Basil, but I did not have Basil's children, so I did some quick searching on my Ancestry account, and that info was taken from other family trees.
Chip, have you been able to read Edward's NC will that's on Ancestry? I'm not very good at reading old English writing, so I can't decipher what it says.
Ron, email me at and I will send it to you.
I looked into the Edward's in NC. Based on the timetable of births for the Edward Phelps' in NC at the below site, none of them could be Basil's son Edward Phelps -
