In the 1850 census, my gg grandfather is listed as Farmer and A L S or A T S. This is in Gibson County, TN, Line 36, Jas S Heath. Any ideas?

Not yet, but I found this fascinating link:
http://teva.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/landingpage/collection/agricult
To me, the letters appear to be
A T L
But I have no idea what they stand for.
Thanks Sandi, that was a great article.
Thanks Peter, for taking a look. Sometimes just another viewpoint is all it takes.

farmer & ATL Attorney at Law? I'm pretty sure it's ATL. Compare the last letter to the L in Labourer a few lines above and the T to Tenn.

Definitely best guess, Anne!
Great guesstimate, Anne and that opens up another avenue to research. I appreciate everyone taking a moment to look at this for me.
