Why can't I search for an ancestor in Australia, is this site only for Americans?

Because you just showed-up to add them? :-) What is great about WikiTree is once you add some of your line it may connect to work other Australian Genealogists have done - and we have a good many Australian Genealogist and family historians here on WikiTree!  Mags
I'm Australian.  We just have to search harder because there are fewer of us I think.  Many hands make light work perhaps.

HI, I am Australian, and unless you have Aboriginal ancestry, it dosn't take long before you are looking overseas,  some of my ancestors have come from England via the USA,  then through Canada, and then onto Australia, I have found relatives in the USA, Canada, France, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, and  South Africa,

Finding ancestors is not a quick process it takes time and effort. Start with yourself and build from there. Collect info and interview people in family while they are alive. Check out gifts and deaths registration including marriages. This will detail their parents names and children.

The number of profiles on Wikitree for Australians is proportionately low - but that’s because we (you and I and the many other Australian Wikitreers) have still got a few million to go.

So far, I have created over 13,000 profiles for Australians, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. We need people like yourself to join us on Wikitree and help add and connect this great part of the world!

Wikitree is not so much a site to find family; rather, it is a site to add to and build the global family.

:( That's sad ... I thought it was for both adding and finding family. Most I what I do here is in the hope others will find their ancestors and get a buzz, and without the attached string of having to contribute in payment.

Wiki tree is one of two family search is also one, and Wiki tree needs to learn from them, I wish Wiki tree would do a big data dump of family search and link up all the sources on trees. Then people would not have to document things over and over. Their is some lines that are already fully document on their that is not document over here. I would check their first.

Australia searches should not be a problem. Who are you looking for in Australia and what is your question?

Birth, marriage and death year are important inputs as well as city and region.

No we are not only for Americans, we have members from all over the globe, many of them are Australian. You can search for your Australian ancestors, but they might not be here.

We are a member contributed tree, one person - one profile, which means that not everyone has been added yet (we're probably a long way from everyone). When you add your ancestors, they will be here, and maybe along the way you will find out that some of them are already here.

Hi Geof

I'm from Australia too.  For Australian sources see Category: Australia Genealogy Resources.

Let me join the many other Australians here on WikiTree that have commented. No one site has every Australian listed. I have had people from other sites surprised to only find their relatives on WikiTree, and some others who did not find their ancestors here. Those that don't find them, will often start a tree and find that someone else adds to it at some stage. WikiTree is a collaborative resource. By engaging with the community you are much more likely to find relatives that you are looking for. I am constantly amazed at the generosity of WikiTreers in selflessly offering assistance to others. But, the nature of collaboration is that it is a two way street, You have to give a little to get a little (or in the case of WikiTree most often, get a lot).

this site relies on people putting up their own ancestry. You can search the profiles already added or put in your own. If you want primary documents, though, you need to search either at your own State Archives or on State Births Deaths and Marriages sites. Is there any way I can help at all? I am an Aussie with six generations behind me in Australia on mum's side. Have traced almost every line back out of Australia. I'm only too happy to assist.

One big problem in Australia is our privacy laws. From settlement to  1916 (most states) you will have a good chance of doing a Birth death and marriage search. After 1916 your only chance is in published records from the local and major news papers or in the data files of the National Library Australia (trove). https://trove.nla.gov.au
