What is the farthest living relative you have found while doing your research?

Hi all,

I just found the names of some of my 4th cousins who are still living and it made me wonder what is the farthest relationship you have found with a living relative that you can confidently confirm? For me, I believe it is my 4th cousin that I just discovered last night.

Obviously, do not give names or any otherwise personally identifiable details.  However, please do share how you found them and if you have officially met them whether online or in person?

I found these cousins on ancestry after some messages with their mom on Ancestry.com. I have not met them but I confirmed the information through one of the siblings' obituaries (he was young and his siblings are around my age, maybe even younger).

I'm friends with my "cousin" who is a first cousin six times removed.
I found a 2546th cousin 23 times removed who happens to be a chimp living in the Congo jungle. His name is Earl. :-)

I haven’t found any very distant living relatives.
I found a 4th cousin in california. H tate and California.Montanna, Wer 2nd great grandfather was a brother of my 2nd great grandfather. My 1st Ggf stayed in Illinois, while the younger siblings and cousins began to move west. We shared pictures which was exciting.

That is awesome! I have yet to make a connection like that. At least not on here or even close to that far removed!

Without WikiTree, 10th cousins through yDNA tests.

With WikiTree, there are probably a few more distant, but I am related to these three: https://youtu.be/q2EAH-rC268

Chris and Kitty are 10th cousins once removed.

Eowyn and Kitty are 17th cousins once removed.

Mags and Kitty are 16th cousins twice removed.

One of my DNA matches on 23andMe was confirmed as a 6th cousin. I think that's the furthest confirmed relative that I've had contact with.

I've corresponded with a sixth cousin from a long-ago separated Australian branch of my family (I'm in California). We have an atDNA match and paper trails to our common ancestors, Americans Colgate-38 and Townsend-3568. Their daughter Harriet married a man named Newell who already had one foot in Australia, and so they went down under, which I think is really cool! :)

I found her through autosomal DNA analysis. Pretty sure it was the common names that drew my attention first.

Officially labelled as 9th cousins once removed, although we have multiple connections which make us closer to 7th cousins, I have a cousin in Australia, myself living in Montreal, Canada.  We actually ''met''  online in a totally different setting via facebook, and since we were both interested in genealogy, we collaborated on stuff, to then find our relationship.   She is also on Wikitree.  :D

Darn, they have to be living?  A publication from Quebec indicates I'm descend. from Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Emperor.  One of his descend. moved to Boston.

(BTW, I still need a mentor)

8th cousin here

I'm seventh cousin once removed with Magnus Sälgö
(the relationship page shows up for me without CSS formatting, but I'm assuming this is because my net connection is presently acting up).

We found this relationship because we both had ancestors categorized in the Swedish parish Främmestad.

I'm related to a bunch of other Swedish amateur genealogists as well, but they aren't on WikiTree, so I'm not sure how closely.

My "cousin', Peter Rusling, has now passed on, but we were net friends for a number of years. Our common ancestor was Robert Rusling who was born in  Amcotts Lincolnshire and married Susanna Lea 24/01/1732. I have seen common ancestry come up for shared medieval ancestors, but I have rarely followed them up, as those relationships are so common, but a link to a middle class Lincolnshire man in the 17th C....now that's nice. I have links in common with others on my Lincolnshire lines, but I think that Peter had the oldest link....unless you count Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She and I are both descended from Cicely Billesby, daughter of Sir John Billesby the Lord of the Manor of Billesby in Lincolnshire at the end of the 15th C. Cicely married twice, first to Sir Alexander Langton, lord of the manor of Langton by Spilsby, Lincolnshire (and thus became my 14th g-grandmother), then to Sir John Asfordby of the manor of Asfordby, Lincolnshire, from whom descends Her Majesty. I think Camilla has the same descent. What fun. (Mind you, I haven't told HM yet....LOL)

An 8th cousin along my direct paternal line (so he shares my surname) who lives four miles away from me, has the same first initial, went to the same school as me, and looks a bit like me.

My family has lived in the same fifteen-mile radius since records began and our two lines split off in the mid-eighteenth century, but have always been local to each other.

I live in Ontario, Canada and so does my friend. We are a little similar and we both have parents from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. She let me enter her family on WikiTree so that I could check for connections. Sure enough, we have the same 5-great grandparents.

During my two years of involvement with WikiTree, I have had several distant cousins contact me from my father's side of the family and from my mother's side of the family.

On WikiTree, I have cousins as far as 22nd cousins but maybe some further than that. I have also spoken to some cousins that are DNA matches on Ancestry, etc. I had one cousin on here to send me some genealogy info through the mail.

Off WikiTree, through Ancestry, I met, communicated, and talked to a 4th cousin. She gave me genealogy info.

I found a 6C1R cousin (6th cousin once removed) but we only keep in email contact.

I live in Canada and she lives in the UK - but we do have a common ancestor from around 250 years ago!!!

My husband, being of french canadian ancestry is related to Celine Dion, Madonna and Angelina Jolie. All around 7th to 10th cousin levels I think....

I'm 9th cousins with a large contingent of Steeves descendants, several of whom are WikiTreers, and others that i have reached out to through Ancestry -- especially adoptees who are reconnecting with their biological roots.

I'm 9th-12th cousins with probably about half of the WikiTreers with descent from the people of New France.

I came upon this old question not long after I had answered the 52 Weeks question "New Source" by posting this picture (of me and 14 classmates ) with the comment "We're all in the 1950 census." I wondered what I could else I could learn about these little girls. Using online sources and a quick trip to the library, I learned that I am related to all of them! They range from 6 to 13th cousins.
