I am understanding it is not the autosomal STR Profile that is used to connect genealogy?. Can you be more specific as to what part is used? As I did test for more than DNATribes basic test, I want to clarify whether they possibly added what is needed or not. Also as one of my children will be testing soon, we'll want to ensure a correct test for another female family member.,
Hello Deb,

Have your child take the Family Finder test from Family Tree DNA then upload to GEDmatch.  I recommend Family Tree DNA because they will store your child's DNA for future testing (you can't do other testing with the same DNA sample if you use 23andMe or AncestryDNA).

The DNATribes test uses CODIS markers which are usually used to identify an individual https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combined_DNA_Index_System  Those markers are not useful for genealogy.

The autosomal test useful for genealogy (and used by 23andMe, Family Finder, AncestryDNA and WeGene) use similar versions of the Illumina OmniExpress Chip http://www.illumina.com/content/dam/illumina-marketing/documents/products/datasheets/datasheet_human_omni_express.pdf
Thank you, that is useful to us.

And as it sinks in, I feel very violated by DNATribes. wow, we had no idea and we paid for it too. I greatly appreciate you pointing these links out to me. Really.

On your DNA Tests page in WikiTree select  "Other auDNA" test.  In the note field say you were tested by DNATribes and give the approximate test date.  Add your DNA Tribe population matching information in the note field.    Leave the GEDmatch ID blank.  Unfortunately, It is not possible to match with distant cousins inorder to find ancestry with the DNATribes test.

Hi Peter. DNATribes isn't in the same class as BritainsDNA and the Genographic Project, or should we consider changing our policy on tests that can't be used for genealogical comparison? http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/DNA_FAQ#Why_can.27t_you_enter_a_National_Geographic_or_BritainsDNA_test.3F
You are correct and I was not thinking clearly.  DNATribes can't be used for genealogical comparison and so there is really no point in having DNATribes information in WikiTree.
I thought the National Geographic test could be transferred into FTDNA(for Free) as an autosomal test - then once that FTDNA account is opened IT can be uploaded to gedmatch - think they are/were assigned "FN..." numbers"
A Genographic Project DNA sample can be transferred into FTDNA for free.  The only information which is transferred is the mtDNA haplogroup (and if the tester is male then his Y-DNA haplogroup).  The tester can then pay to order a Family Finder test (and/or mtDNA and/or Y-DNA test).  The tester can then upload their Family Finder result to GEDmatch.
Peter, Thanks for clarifying that.
