How far do I take a name I'm reviewing for Magna Carta Project?

I'm currently reviewing the Rodney profiles for the Magna Carta Project.  I was wondering how far do I take their descendants?  Would I take them into 1800s? 1900s? It seems like it goes on forever if I take into consideration cousins, spouses and their children, and then their spouses.  I don't mind of course, I like to do a thorough job.  Thank you.

The purpose of the Magna Carta project is to document and prove the trail between a Magna Carta surety baron and a Gateway ancestor. Proving line of descent beyond those parameters is permissible and can be personally rewarding but it is not the stated purpose of the project if I understand correctly,  Someone please correct me if I am in error.

Thank  you for clarifying David.  I've been taking things too far then LOL. No wonder it has taken me so long to complete.  :)

James Im a new member of the project and not the expert but I think the narrow confines of the project scope was to have a project of a size and scale that would be manageble.  It would certainly be possible to expand the reach of the project to include every Magna Carta descendant, however the work required would be monumental.  And the project largely relies for sourcing on a specific work of Douglas Richardson, "Magna Carta Ancestry and Royal Ancestry "  This work considered the project "bible" is considered to be accurate and can be cited as a definitive source.  It is comprehensive but does not include the many thousands of possible later day descendants,  So, in short to make the work of Magna Carta project researchers manageble the parameters, or boundries are  drawn around a smaller piece of territory to cover.   There have been a number of discussions in G2G regarding whether the scope of the project should be expanded.

Yes, I have followed the discussion about Magna Carta Project expansion. We could take things ad infinitum if there were not a limit placed on how far we take descendants and their families. I'm currently using the Douglas Richardson Royal Ancestry volumes for my research, as well as The Peerage. I appreciate your feedback.

I think it is important to occasionally remind ourselves that we are volunteers - and we, as individual volunteers, should do as much, or as little, as we feel comfortable doing.

If you (as an individual) want to trace every descendant of a person, or just one specific branch or line, that connects two people of interest, every quality contribution furthers the goals of Wikitree and it's various projects. Wherever you leave off is the 'connection point' for a later researcher.

Rob, that is very well said. I totally agree with you. That sums up the philosophy of how WikiTree operates.

I'm a newbie to the Magna Carta Project and like you I've often wondered how far donwn the descendant line do I go. While the Magna Carta is for tying a Surety Baron to a Gateway person, and that I fully respect. However, for me personally, I enjoy following the related Gateway person back to myself. It is a time consuming and trying effort, but I assue that it is ok to persue a line to your satisfaction. As I love History and really enjoy the challeng of tying my family back to someone I only read about in school. It just brings history alive.

Hi Ted, I agree totally with that.  I feel as  you do, and get a lot of satisfaction tracing a gateway ancestor to a current generation. Actually, that is my major goal in my personal genealogical research. It can be very time consuming but as you said it is most rewarding.
The goal/purpose of the Magna Carta Project is to provide a well-sourced, solid, trail for each Gateway Ancestor documented by Richardson to a Magna Carta Surety Baron. This way, when someone finishes documenting their line _to_ the Gateway Ancestor, they'll zip right on up to a surety baron.

And yup - WikiTree should be fun!

The Magna Carta Project is about creating high quality, researched and reviewed trails from Gateway Ancestors to Magna Carta Barons. See Magna Carta Project Trails for more information about trails and details about re-review of completed trails.

Cheers, Liz
