I have a lot of information about James Dolan's siblings and descendants, but little on his origins in Ireland.  From his naturalization papers (and family story) he is from Roscommon but, alas, no town.  His wife was Mary Gately (also born abut 1792).  They came to Boston with 5 children in 1841, via St John NB.  His death record lists his parents as Matthew and Margaret.

I'd appreciate any information about him.  Thanks!

I did a little poking around. No exact matches. But, ...,seems to be some Mary Gately(s) born around 1792 in R.C. Parish, St Peter's Athlone (Co. Roscommon). Same parish for a few James Dolan.

There is an Eleanor Dolan born/bap Feb1830 to a James Dolan and Mary N/g or Mary Dolan?

So, nothing exact but a possible lead.

Thanks very much!  Unfortunately, both Dolans and Gatelys are common in Roscommon.

James and Mary had a daughter Eleanor (my heart leapt!), but born in 1823-1827 (probably closer to 1823- she gets younger as time goes by, according to her recorded age).   Was this record also in St Peters,
Athlone?

The other children were Rosanna 1825, John 1929, Ann 1831, and James 1837.  Sadly, they stuck with common names.

I am assuming that the family was  fairly prosperous since James and Mary (in their late 40s in 1841) could pay for 7 fares.

Within a few years of arriving in Boston, James had a store, so I wondered if he had done something similar in Ireland (and thus more likely lived in a town).  He always referred to his occupation as "trader,"  if that has any specific meaning. It seems to have been a grocery store.

Thank you very much for taking the time to look into this.  Pat
