I'm looking for my great grandmothers family Elizabeth Jane Basset born 1858/9 married (John) Henry Wilson in 1884 in England-- his fathers name was Abraham Wilson and Her fathers name was John. Bassett

The Marriage of Henry Wilson & Elizabeth Jane BASSETT was conducted 3 June 1884, Chorlton, All Saints, Lancashire. The record list the bride & groom's father's as John Bassett & Abraham Wilson. (Manchester CofE Marriages & Banns (1754-1930).(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NNRG-K3Y)

Elizabeth in both the 1901 &1911 Census, records her place of birth as Everton, Lancashire, although the 1891 Census gives her birth place as Abergele, Denbighshire, which would correspond  with the BMD birth record of St. Asaph (Denbighshire) Vol.11b, Page 365 q June 1858 - Elizabeth Jane Bassett.

Ther is no trace of Elizabeth in 1861 & 1871 in either England or Wales Census, however there is a corrected entry in 1881, (from Liverpool to Denbighshire) of Elizabeth, a servant staying with a cousin in Faulkner Street, Liverpool. His cousin and spouse are recorded to be from Denbighshire.

What did it mean to be a servant at that time? Could my ancestor have been an indentured servant? I wonder if her life was miserable in this position. Thank you again for this info.

Usually, a "live in"  person who cleaned the house, perhaps assisted in meal preparation whilst the lady of the house had & looked after the children.
