This is only one found. James Broughton,Baptised Kirkby Cum Osgodby,

Lincolnshire ,Baptised July 28 1811,

I could not find a suitable parish map Lincolnshire.To see how close to

Gedney  Hill.People did not travel far back then.

You're correct that this is the only Lincolnshire born JB but I've frequently found the "Born in County?" box on the 1841 census was just automatically ticked. The locations are not close at all and this candidate is unlikely for me because Susanna was 46 in 1851 and so would've been close to 30 when they married in 1835 and a husband of ~24 would be unusual.

I think this JB was a policeman who emigrated to Canada in the 1850s? Can the original poster enlighten us?

I don't think JB went to Canada, but 3 of his sons did.

From what I hear Alfred,Edward and Silvanus did. Silvanus is buried

in Sidney, Nova Scotia. I think Alfred went from there to the West Indies

and then to India, I don't know about Edward but we think he went to

Austrailia.

I am looking for the same family (parents) information for James Broughton married to Susanna Amory.   In one place I found that he was from Dorking, England.   He was about 5 years younger than his wife so born between about 1808 and 1814 from census records.    I have not found passenger lists to Australia but have also been told that at least one brother went there.  Alfred was in the Army and went to India.    Sylvanus is buried in Sydney, NS

I believe this is the correct James Broughton as in both the 1841 and 1851 census records Susanna is shown as being 6 years older than James.   I am trying also to confirm the parents of James and where he was born..   I have also found that James was a police officer but was a boarder in another home in 1851.   Have you found anything further?

The 1841 census actually has "N" for born in county which makes sense as James considered himself to have been born over the border in Rutland. His age is given as 30 which is doubtful. I would normally read his occupation as "Tailor" but given his later police career it might actually be jailor. Was there a prison here?

As Velma says, in the 1851 census James is living apart from his family, probably as part of his duties. His occupation is described as "Rural Police Officer formerly T/Jailor", age 35. His birthplace is given as Skillington, Rutland. This is slightly odd as Skillington doesn't seem to have been in Rutland historically. It's close but in Lincolnshire.

Here is James in the 1861 census age 44. Susanna has presumably died as he has a new wife. His occupation as police constable and birthplace of Skillington, Rutland identify him. His sons-in-law are what we now called stepsons.

So I still haven't established his birth but he's not the JB from Kirkby, who appears to have died young in any case. He seems to have been born in Skillington which is near Grantham in around 1816/76 if the later censuses are to be believed.

I don't know if he is the one born or baptized at Kirkby
Cum ----- but the dates are correct and the only one that I found in LIncolnshire in 1811.   He would have been born in 1811 to be 5 to 6 years younger than Susanna.
