Categories, Tags, and Templates -- When is best to use which?

+28 votes
Categories, tags, and templates are excellent WikiTree features.  I can imagine that it is best to use different ones or more than one in a particular situation.  Can you summarize when it is preferable to use one over the other?  Thank you.

Tags are available in G2G, but are not available for use on profiles, except that by following a surname tag you can see editing activity for profiles in that surname.  Users can follow tags, but can't follow templates or categories.

Templates have been created for certain special purposes. A template generally creates a formatted display on the profile where it is used and it often also automagically places the profile into one or more categories. Templates are not available for all situations where a person might want to use a category, and they aren't available in G2G. Only leaders can create or edit templates.

Categories can be used on profiles, but are not used in G2G. Any contributor can create or edit a category, but the Categorization project has guidelines for their use.

Good session on Futurelearn about Genealogy to family history: the value of adding context about the importance of adding context

it brings greater meaning and richness to your family's story and hopefully helps bring the people alive to you. So it's really a great thing to try to get your hands on some context.

I am convinced that we can use categories for creating this richness..... answering questions like

  • What was it like working in a carpet factory in the 1830s in Scotland?
  • What was it like to be on that ship going across the ocean?
  • What happened in social groups?
  • What you could actually buy with that money you earned?
  • How was life working as a blacksmith in the 1700 in Sweden?
  • What happened to a soldier wife in the 1800 in Sweden when the soldier died and she had to leave the house with children...?

Good example of a source I found on Family Search it's a death record

Full size - this source was found in wiki article Sweden Handwriting

For me the following subjects could be categories on a profile with this source just to add value for the reader or researcher....

  1. Old Sweden Handwriting wiki at Family Search
  2. Fattighjon - word mentioned in the source --> Wikitree Category:Fattighjon
  3. Fattigvård - Poor relief in Sweden see Category:Fattigvård
  4. Backstuga - word mentioned in the article - Wikitree Category:Backstuga
very cool
