I have his original  discharge papers dated November 24 1845 Boston.Ship was "Cumberland" .The name of the Captain looks like Saul L. Breese????This was just before he came to Australia to settle.

Are there any records that would have any information about his time in the American Navy and when he enlisted?

Indeed there is... You can check the "National Archives" - Military Personnel Records at:

http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/

Records prior to WWI are in the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C.

Copies of military pension claim files for military service from the American Revolution up to before World War I and bounty-land warrant applications for Federal military service before 1856 can be ordered on line here:

https://eservices.archives.gov/orderonline/start.swe?SWECmd=Start&SWEHo=eservices.archives.gov

But
registration is required!

All information can be acquired at the first link I posted.
