Married Helen Mary Hill AKA Mary Helen Hill AKA Mary Ellen Hill of Illinois. Had possibly 8 children including James and Harry Arthur Mclean Jr. Lived in Hessville, Indiana.

Harry maybe an alias for Harold or Henry.
Allegedly worked as a taxman in Nottingham.

At this point, I'd like a conclusive trail of immigration documents from the UK to the US. The New York Passenger Arrival Lists of Ellis Island 1892-1924 does not agree with the 1893 immigration estimate given on the US census of the Harry Mclean I am confident is in fact the correct H. Mclean that I am looking for.

Harry has an immigration date of 1872 on a 1920 US Census where his last name is misspelled as Mcleavon. It is possible that Harry M. Mclean's parents immigrated to the US while Harry was still very young in which case finding his parent's immigration records could be conclusive.

If his parents are Anthony and Jane and they immigrated to the US with him then there should be records of that.

Anthony Mclean is a supervisor at the Internal Revenue Excise, so this matches the family story shifted by a generation.

Harry Mortimer McLeans parents are listed in England Census, as Anthony Mclean, born c 1836 Brompton, Yorkkshire & Jane born c 1853, Warrington Lancashire.

I believe Jane to be Jane Houghton who married Anthony McLean in Blackburn in 1880. (Blackburn 8e /333 q December 1880). Her birth was registered 1852 (Warrington 8c/101 q March 1852).

Their is no trace of a baptism record for Anthony, although this is Anthony in the 1851 Census, with his parents, living in Brompton, Northallerton, Yorkshire. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKVV-WHJW. Anthony died in 1892, Blackburn (Blackburn 8e/326 q March 1892) and buried 30 January 1892.  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J85G-X6K

Ian ~

In the case you are still looking, I believe the correct parents for Harry Mortimer McLean are in the record below.  Also is the 1881 census of Harry in the household of his maternal grandparents, Wales.  It appears that the enumerator may have lumped them all together on the listed POB.

I believe the Jane McLean in the 1891 census above is Harry's stepmother.

Thank you, Mary.

I am still looking for information about Harry Mortimer and Nellie "Hellen Mary" Mclean nee Hill. I do believe that Anthony and Jane are the parents of Harry Mortimer Mclean though the records I have reviewed for that possibility indicate the Harry was born or baptized in Northallerton, and I have not been certain of his parents. Anthony matches what my family lore from my maternal grandfather has told me, but he does not like or want to discuss his near ancestors in general. The SSN record indicating Amelia Davies is consistent with records I have seen and introduces a new piece of vital information that I have been missing.

I appreciate the assistance. Keep me apprised if you come across anything else.

Enjoy,

-Ian

You are very welcome!

Below is Harry's death cert.  On the cert., Amelia's maiden name is Davies.  Which might confirm the 1881 census for Harry's grandparents in Wales.  He is buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Hammond.  He died of prostate cancer.

That's him alright. Precisely what I have learned from interviewing a descendant of Adelaide McLean and reviewing records. Looks like there is a discrepancy between his birth year. 1871 or 1873. Agreement on the date, 2nd of December.

Another confirmation of his mother's maiden name being Davies is from the new GRO index (registration needed but free)

    MCLEAN, HARRY  MORTIMER            DAVIES

GRO Reference: 1872  M Quarter in MANCHESTER  Volume 08D  Page 321

    https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/menu.asp

(you could get an exact date of birth by ordering the certificate  but from the date of registration, the 1871 date is possible, the 1873 date not so)

There is a possible  marriage of  Amelia Davies to an Anthony Mclean  registered in W Derby in 2Q of 1863 MCLEAN  Anthony    W. Derby  8b 649

    You mentioned Northallerton.

The 1871 census  for Newton, Lancashire RG10; Piece: 4056; Folio: 88; Page: 37   has

Anthony Maclean age 35 Inland Revenue Officer Northallerton

    Amelia,wife 29, Wales

    William, son, 4

    Charlotte  A,dau 3

Charles L.,son 1 ( says all these children were born in Wales)

Anthony Mclean,  by then supervisor in the Inland Revenue  died on 26th Jan 1892  leaving his estate worth £352 10s, administration granted to wife Jane, (you can find this in the Calendar of Probate on Ancestry or https://www.gov.uk/search-will-probate

Anthony Mclean  was buried at St Mary, Mellor, Lancashire on January 30th 1892, the burial register (ref PR 3093/1/4 ) says he was 56 years old and lived in St Pauls Parish Blackburn

Also buried at St Mary, Mellor, Lancashire(PR 3093/1/4 ) was Amelia Mclean.

She was buried on 21, Jan 1880,  said to be 38 years old and also lived in St Pauls Parish Blackburn.

The marriage of Anthony and Amelia is seems to have taken place in Everton

Liverpool  Records Office, Everton, St George,  283 GEV/3/5

It took place on May 28th 1863, at Everton, St George, Walton on the Hill

Anthony Mclean, full age, bachelor, inland revenueofficer, West Derby Road, father William Mclean, builder

Amelia Davies, full age, spinster, Newtown, County Montgomery, father , Henry Arthur Davies, (glainer?? possibly from looking at earlier census glazier) both signed and the witnesses were John Lewis and Elizabeth Davies.

The 1851 census has Amelia Davies born in Llanllwchaiarn, Montgomeryshire, Wales  and living with her parents Henry Davies aged 33, son in law,  b Montgomery, Montgomeryshire, Wales  and Elizabeth Davies  aged  32, born Newtown, Montgomeryshire, Wales

They are in the home of Amelia's  maternal grandparents, William Lewis aged,  57, Grocer and Innkeeper,  born Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire, Wales and Elizabeth Lewis aged 56, born Treveglws, Montgomeryshire, Wales

(better stop.. sorry if repeating what you have already found)

Thanks everyone for the information. I have taken so long to get back at this because of world events, other priorities, and I did not see the updates on this until I was going through profiles.
