G2G: Suggestions for Special:Unconnected [closed]

One of my favorite things to do on Wikitree is connect unconnected people to the tree. I've been using the Special:Unconnected tool a lot lately, and there are two things I've noticed that bother me and I would like to see changed:

1. The links in the text "managed by X" go to Wikitree's homepage. They should either not be linked or go to the user's profile.

2. BC profiles that redirect to Wikipedia show up in the list (example, http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Larissa-1), and they will always be there. There is no way to connect them to the tree so they will eventually fill the first pages of the Oldest Created, Oldest Birthdate, and Fewest Connections lists. Could redirected profiles be excluded?

And a bonus bug: Arabic text switches the "managed by x [x connections]" text around (example, "managed by أحمد عبدالوهاب خليل [4 connections]").

Thanks for the edit link.

She still shouldn't be connected because that would require the creation of many more BC profiles, which are not supposed to be on Wikitree.

It seems to me that we all need to recognize and accept that there are some profiles that can never be connected. (Don't let these unconnected profiles contribute to any obsessive-compulsive tendencies we might have.)

This situation is not limited to ancient people whose profiles have been converted to Wikipedia redirects. More recent examples in my own watchlist include:

  • Tilley-954 and Symons-563 -- men whose family connections are unknown, but whose lives are to some extent documented in historical records, and who have sometimes been confused or conflated with other people who have documented genealogy.
  • A 17th-to-18th century Native American for whom I created a profile because he figures in the biographies of a number of people who have genealogies, but whose own genealogy may not be possible to determine.

I don't mind profiles that should be on Wikitree being unconnected. There is always a chance that some new evidence will emerge and we can connect them to the tree. And even if they are never connected, they have a profile that can be viewed by the public, with (hopefully) sourced and accurate information.

But I really don't think we need to see profiles that never should have been on Wikitree in the first place.

Consider this. Let's say in a year the first page of results consists mostly of redirected profiles. A newer member goes to try out the Unconnected tool, and clicks on the first profile. It redirects them to Wikipedia. They go back to Wikitree, click on the next profile down, and it redirects them to Wikipedia again. Say they click on 5 links and that happens each time. I think it would be extremely frustrating for someone that doesn't know what is going on.

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the work you're doing connecting the unconnected! You're a hero.

And thank you for reporting these bugs. They should both be easy to correct. The first one ... is now fixed. The second one is a quirk of how we're redirecting these, i.e. to Wikipedia instead of other WikiTree pages. That screwed up our tracking system for when a profile is a redirect. Easy to fix now that you've pointed it out.

Thanks again,

Chris

Thank you Chris :)

Jamie, I was just talking to Eowyn about this. One thing we lack is an easy way to identify all the profiles that are redirected to Wikipedia, so that we can add the redirect indicator. Maybe you could help her by pointing out all the ones you see on Special:Unconnected. Thanks again!
