Who were the parents of John Owen of Windsor, Connecticut (1622 - 1698)

According to sources listed on Owen-124, John Owen of Windsor was probably born in Wales about 1622, but no further information is known about his ancestry. The parents attached to him, Richard Owen-1466 and Johanna Pitt-8, are each marked 'uncertain', and there's a comment on the Owen-124 profile indicating that there is no documentation to support them as his parents. Now a new profile for John Owen has been created, Owen-4426, with no documentation at all for his parentage. But there are two parents attached to this new profile, a new one that was created for this profile, Richard Owen-4427 and also the same Johanna Pitt-8. Now there is a merge proposal to merge Owen-4426 and Owen-124. I would like to remove the parents from both profiles prior to the merge. Does anyone have any documentation to support any of the attached parents? Is there agreement that the parents should be detached?

I believe the two fathers Richard are meant to be the same and should be merged also.

And if there is no documentation, you can remove the parents. I would specifically put messages on both profiles, asking managers if they have documentation. You also need to add a === Disputed Parents === section which links to the undocumented parents, and points out that they are undocumented.

This is the record for this christening

"England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N52W-YV3 : accessed 21 April 2016), John Owen, 06 Mar 1624; citing OSWESTRY,SHROPSHIRE,ENGLAND, reference ; FHL microfilm 924,009.

However, there are 7 other indexed christenings for a John Owen in the IGI between 1620 and 1625. And the John may not be indexed. A christening record does not a proof make.

Oh.. I must need to wash my glasses, I could have sworn that christening record said December. One of the other ones with a father John was in December.

Kay - I reviewed all the google hits I could find re John Owen's parentage and, while I found a number of family trees that show Richard Owen and Johanna Pitt as his parents, I could not find ANY that cited any sources or supporting evidence and I found several posts by people who had also had doubts about the parentage because they could find no supporting evidence. See, eg,, parentage http://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/owen/4536/ and "Many on-line genealogies give Richard Owen and Joanna Pitt as John's Parents, but there is not a shred of proof to this." http://www.kukkus.com/felsing/getperson.php?personID=I2270&tree=02 I also find it negative evidence that none of John's many children were named either Richard or Johanna. Based on the foregoing, I think that even listing Richard and Johanna as his parents with uncertain tags is too much and they should be disconnected (and the Shropshire place of birth replaced with maybe Wales uncertain) and the Disputed Origins section beefed up more fully discuss the issue.

BTW, someone else had an alternative theory that might we worth looking into - that John of Windsor was the son of a John Owen of New Haven: http://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/owen/5130/

Thanks to both Anne and Chase for your input on this. I've removed the parents and completed the merge for the two profiles of John Owen. It looks like it's possible that another John Owen (his father?) was in New Haven in 1642. But it doesn't appear that at this time there is anything definitive on the subject.
