Until the militia units are categorized, I believe your best bet for now is {{War of 1812 | Louisiana}}, but I bow to my American colleagues on the project if I'm off-base here. Nice profile BTW.

that is the correct place for now, but the issue is going to be using the template.  what you have now is:

{{War of 1812 |Pvt Capt DeBlanc's Co Louisiana Militia}}

which adds him to [[Category: War of 1812]] and displays and image with the text Pvt Capt DeBlanc's Co Louisiana Militia

{{War of 1812 | Louisiana}} will add him to [[Category: War of 1812, Louisiana]] but will lose the text Pvt Capt DeBlanc's Co Louisiana Militia

you should not do both templates as that would add him to both the general War of 1812 and War of 1812, Louisiana categories, we are only supposed to add people to the most specific category in the chain.

you could add him to {{War of 1812 | Louisiana}},  that will keep the icon, the correct category, and then list the rank/unit in the Militia Service section as a discrete item instead of buried in the reference line

we are still working on a document with all of the proposed standard military and war categories, once done it will get staffed to other project memners for concurrence, then off to the categorization project team for approval.  once that is done, we will be able to start creating categories again and one can be made for William's Capt DeBlanc's Co Louisiana Militia and he would be moved into that by changing the template value

Thanks, Keith, for this and for all the work you're doing on these categories.

Thanks Laurie and Keith.

I followed the first part O Laura's paragraph: "{{War of 1812 | Louisiana}},  that will keep the icon, the correct category" but I got lost here: "and then list the rank/unit in the Militia Service section as a discrete item instead of buried in the reference line".

you have

{{War of 1812 |Pvt Capt DeBlanc's Co Louisiana Militia}}

for this template, what shows before the | identifies the backend code segment to apply, what shows after the | is displayed on the icon text. the code also takes what is after the | and will add the person to the category, if it exists, otherwise it will drop into the default War of 1812 category.

the other section is

Militia Service
: Louisiana Militia service during War of 1812. [See photo]<ref>"United States War of 1812 Index to Pension Application Files, 1812-1910," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X8CG-TP8 : accessed 7 May 2015), William Harrington, ; citing military unit Pvt Capt DeBlanc's Co La Mil, NARA microfilm publication M313 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 840,472. </ref>

his unit is listed in the <ref> </ref> section, and can be seen looking farther down in the Sources #3 entry, but you need to look for it there.

if you changed it to start as

Militia Service
: Louisiana Militia service during War of 1812 as a Private in Captain DeBlanc's Company, Louisiana Militia

it is easier to see it.
