What's the protocol for finding out if a past relative had a hereditary condition and to know if you might have it?

I am not familiar with it but there are tests from DNA companies but not certain how reliable they are.

I know that many genealogist create a "cause of death" pedigree chart by checking every death record for their ancestors and building a chart with it.
