DNA-Cousins and Triangulation

+8 votes
I got the results back today from my Family Finder test and in the results it listed my 4th cousin who was already known to me, first through Wiki Tree and after communicating and sharing our information (once we shared a few emails it was clear that we are 4th cousins).

Now I would like to do the Triangulation thingy so that I can check the 'Confirmed with DNA' box on here, however I need someone to explain like I am 5 so that I can understand how to do that.

Here's a link to the ISOGG (International Society of Genetic Genealogy) explanation with regard to triangulation:  http://isogg.org/wiki/Triangulation

I'd recommend you read through the various links at the bottom of the page for additional information.  ISOGG is a top-notch site with regard to DNA.  Here's the link to their information on chromosome mapping, with additional links by our very own Wikitree DNA wizard Kitty Cooper:  http://isogg.org/wiki/Chromosome_mapping

Thanks for the reply. I had already read that and it is not helpful to me......I need someone that can explain things in simpler terms, as well as explaining in simpler terms what to do with the data/how to get to gedmatch....there are too many options on the download screen and everything in the help guide is written for people that have better understanding of terms and better computer skills.
Is it possible for both of you to be in GEDmatch? Otherwise it is more difficult to explain in simple terms what to do.

Thanks for your reply. I can not even figure out how to get my raw DNA off FTDNA....there are 6 different options to download .... which do I choose? and then it says it will be compressed and I may need some other thing to unzip it, I don't even know what that means.......and even if I can figure it out, it is not clear...do you unzip then upload to GEDmatch?

My 4 th cousin is a match on FTDNA site, it actually says that our predicted relationship is 2-4th cousins, however as I stated above, I am already certain that we are 4th cousins after examing and sharing our trees and emailing each other discussing our shared family.
I should also mention that on FTDNA it also says we are confirmed 4th cousins.
Thank you Peter. I think I can handle the downloading and then uploading now, however I am sure that I will be back with many more questions soon. Thanks again.
Does FTDNA really say you are confirmed to be 4th cousins? Or does FTDNA say your relationship range is 3rd to 5th cousins?
It does say confirmed however when I first got my results this morning it said our relationship range was 2nd-4th cousin. I suspect that it changed to confirmed only because I did confirm that we are related and known to each other.
"Confirmed" status would be user-entered information.
