Does anyone know the percentage of Wikitree members who are based in the UK?

Question

I am interested in increasing the amount of Wikitree members from the UK and would like to know if there is an approximate figure or percentage of these members for me as a starting point.

It could be that i am just looking in the wrong places for them! but i would like to encourage Brits to help US, Canadian, Australian and NZ wikitree'rs with their UK ancestors.

No idea but I'm eager to help increasing it! At the very least there must be many UK genealogists who could upload their GEDCOMs here if nothing else. That alone would generate a huge increase in profiles for little effort. How to reach them though?

I have no idea.  Though I am in the UK, not been on the G2G forum for a couple of months as I've been creating profiles.

In the past when people have asked for help, I've tried to assist.

Good question! I am sharing all my profiles one by one on google to show that the page is active, i have a wide collection of genie friends in the UK mainly pro so i will invite them each over the next few months. I share my wikitree on facebook and twitter prompting UK friends to add their's so we will see how that works!

It's a fantastic thing to help people with their profiles, once you get over that first hurdle it gives you more confidence and you can see that there is always help available!

For what it's worth, WikiTree had 111,472 visits from the UK in the past month. 7.85% of the total.

the UK project has county sponsors and willing to help people, most of who I think are UK based.

I'm willing to help, especially with understanding distances and counties, as I have noticed some profiles and the connected profiles jump up and down the country, across counties, I've heard Americans tended to travel longer distances, whereas in the UK we didn't.

Interesting, he mentioned something about maps.  Can there be a "stick pin" map where the current members can indicate residence at least by state/province/canton whatever?  That would be interesting. Thanks.

I'm in the U.K. And willing to help. My family names are Mills, Davis, Admiraal and Jenner. I know I have relatives who moved to the U.S. And Canada.

I think we probably need to 'advertise' it more.  An awful lot of my genea-friends have never even heard of WikiTree.  I get a lot of "WikiTree? What's that, then?"  If they have heard of WT, they have never explored it.

(Obviously, some have, and use it regularly! but only a small percentage of the whole.)

I would love it if once I located my ancestors in the Jamestown Colony, for example, there would be someone across the pond looking for his/her ancestor who came to America as an indentured servant or immigrant of any variety.

I'm an English family historian as well and am only 500/10k profile migrated over so far but know my tree links to America, Canada, New Zealand and Australia pretty often, so it is slowly coming.

I only found out about wikitree because of something I had heard on the radio about wiki breaking the record for the largest family meetup.  I am inviting cousins who are family members and geneologist's as I re-research the lines that connect us and wiki will spread by word of mouth in the UK. Wiki did seem very American-centric when i first started here though, less so as I have go to know it and become a connector.

However, if anyone did have the time to have a push it would be worth seeing if anyone could get a letter into one of the family history magazines (Practical Family History, Family History Monthly or Family Tree Magazine), especially seeing as we just hit 12 million profiles. Or seeing if they would agree to covering wikitree when they next did a article comparing the different family trees. Or if anyone is a member of one of the county history groups seeing if they could get something in the magazines they send out.
