On John Stewarts wifes death certificate she is described as "widow of Captain John Stewart". Three of their sons are described as "Mariners"

Try the link below it is the Lloyd's register of Merchant seamen (earliest surviving record is 1764. Another good resource is the National Archives ship registration registers.
