Where in the world was Howard J Norton from 1874 to 1929?

Howard J Norton (estimated birth year 1874) shows up with his wife Jennie M. (Merriel) Norton (I am not sure of the spelling of her exact LNAB) and a 12 year old daughter, Grace Norton, in New Jersey 1930 according to US Census data.

According to social security number application records for Grace E. (Norton) Ramsey, her mother is Gertrude Chester and her father is Howard Norton. I can find ample records for Jennie M Merriel from 1880 to 1940; prior to 1930, Jennie lived with her family seemingly continuously from birth up until she (presumably) married to and (definitely) moved in with Howard Norton in 1930.

Grace (Norton) Ramsey's social security number indicates she was born in New Jersey, but I think it is possible that is inaccurate in this case. Grace's rough birth year puts her birth solidly in the territory of World War I, and her father's rough birth year seems to indicate that he likely was either drafted or enlisted for military service. Unfortunately, the majority of service records for World War I were destroyed in the 1970s by a fire in the centralized archives (this is why you don't centralize these record keeping processes).

I think that it is likely that Grace was born overseas and possibly to a person of non-US-citizenship. Her alternate name is possibly Elizabeth as that seems to be her middle name.

It is conspicuous that records seem to be absent for both Grace and Howard prior to 1930. If I could either find record for Grace in the home of Gertrude or Howard prior to 1930 then that would go a long way towards figuring out who Grace's parents are.

I will note that I can find a Howard Norton and Gertrude Norton in the New Jersey area prior to 1930, but the issue with the pair is that Gertrude Norton died many years prior to Grace Norton's birth. It is possible that Grace's mother of record is in error, but I wouldn't consider that probable without a birth record.

The 1st digits of the SS# do not indicate where a person was born, but where they lived when they applied for the card or where they actually applied.
I knew that it was something along those lines. Thanks for the confirmation.

Review of "United States Census, 1930," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X46H-NL9 : accessed 1 April 2017), Howard Norton, East Greenwich, Gloucester, New Jersey, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) ED 4, sheet 2A, line 34, family 36, NARA microfilm publication T626 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 2002), roll 1345; FHL microfilm 2,341,080.

compared to "United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MN8W-S71 : 14 July 2016), Howard Norton in household of James G Norton, Swedesborough, Gloucester, New Jersey, United States; citing enumeration district ED 103, sheet 543D, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 0781; FHL microfilm 1,254,781.

Indicates that is is unlikely the latter Howard Norton is the same as the former Howard Norton.

The Howard J Norton I am interested in has his father's birth place listed as Illinois.
