Civil War Service:
Enlisted as a Corporal in the Union Army and mustered into Company H of the 151st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on November 1, 1862. Wounded and left on the battlefield during the first day's fighting at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. Corporal John H. Schaeffer remained on Confederate controlled McPherson's Ridge and died of his injuries on July 3, 1863.

The 151st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment fought 2 major battles during their 9 months of active service. At Chancellorsville, the Regiment was only lightly engaged but Companies B, C, D and G were deployed outside the breastworks as sharpshooters and skirmishers on the right wing of the Union Army. Colonel Harrison Allen, reported that the 151st captured 61 prisoners and killed 12 enemy soldiers while losing only 2 killed, 5 wounded and 9 missing. The 1st day at Gettysburg, the 151st deployed on the left of the famous Iron Brigade and continued to fight in advanced positions on McPherson's Ridge as the Iron Brigade retreated to defensive barricades at the Lutheran Seminary. The 151st also pulled back to the Seminary and continued their fight until forced out by overwhelming numbers of Confederate infantry. The 2nd day, the 151st was moved from their camp on Cemetery Hill to strengthen front line positions on Cemetery Ridge. On Gettysburg's last day, the 151st had front row seats for Pickett's Charge. After the battle smoke cleared at Gettysburg, the 151st Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment reported losses of 81 killed, 181 wounded and 75 missing or captured. Out of 487 men engaged they lost 337, total casualties of 69%. The only Union Army unit reporting higher losses was the 24th Michigan Infantry Regiment of the Iron Brigade with total casualties of 363. On the 6th of July, survivors of the 151st marched out of Gettysburg in pursuit of Lee's Army until they were relieved from duty on July 19th and returned to Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where the Regiment mustered out of active service on July 27, 1863.

Thank you Frank.  I found that before, but wasn't sure it is the correct family.  So many John Schaeffer's.   Thank you.

Just not sure.  Have seen this, but am totally lost when it goes past Corp. John H. Schaeffer.  Thank you

John and Elizabeth were living in New Schaefferstown PA during the 1860 census.  Schaeffers founded the town..i would have thought John's father living there in 1850 but as we know don't see it....Jackson Lebanon, PA  is close(10 miles)
