Linking known siblings without known parents

There are two existing individuals in the tree who I know are brothers: Conrad Langenbach (Langenbach-26) and Balser Langenbach (Langenbach-28); this fact has been cited in the literature (Ernst, Donna B., "Sundance - My Uncle", College Station, TX, Creative Publishing Co. 1992.)

As a newbie around here, I went to link the two together as siblings, but then discovered it is only possible to link siblings via a shared parent. This seems kinda unsatisfying, since I would have to create an "Unknown Langenbach". Is this the accepted practice for this situation?

Thanks,

Bill

It is the accepted practice to create a parent with an Unknown first name when linking siblings. Wikitree has been set up to do that automatically.

Just add the {{Unsourced}} template to the biography and someday someone might be able to add information for the parent.

Thanks to everybody for the answers! Though if WikiTree has been set up to add the parent automatically, it is not clear how. When you go to one existing sibling and click to add the other, where the other profile already exists, it explicitly tells you to "...edit the parents of that profile or the parents of XX so that they share a parent." There is no place to fill in the ID of the sibling profile.

Anyway, it's good to know that it's accepted practice is to create the explicit Unknown parent. I have gone that route. Thanks for helping a newbie.

Hi William

If you go to the edit tab of your first child, click on add sibling then make use of :

B.) To create a new profile Help for the brother or sister of Jane Doe enter their information here:

After completion of this form the father will be automatically created with Unknown first name and same Last Name as children.

Understand, thanks! But when the second child already has an existing profile, option (A) applies, so in that case automatic creation of the parent is not an option. That is the situation I was contending with.

But the automatic creation is good to know about if I do find I need to use option B. Thanks for the pointers.
In that case you have to first add the parent to one of the children and then link the additional child to the parents profile by using their Wikitree ID.

I hope I am on the same page as you and I am not confusing the matter. :)
Yes, I did it the way you described, no worries. I first had to explicitly create an "Unknown" parent for the first, then link the existing sibling using their WikiTree ID. It's just that there is no automatic "Unknown" parent generation by WikiTree in that scenario; it's got to be 100% manual when both siblings already exist without a known parent.

I've created an unknown once or twice in special circumstances.  And I've also got one speculative parent which I may have to change someday.  I don't think it's a problem and sometimes you can even source an unknown usually through having a parent's place of birth in a census.  Besides, having an irksome "unknown" if your watchlist may encourage you to work harder to research that profile.

If you link 2 profiles as siblings, the system will automatically create 1 parent (unless there is one already) which you can then edit with name etc (if known)

This is quite logical, as to be siblings, they must have at least 1 common parent.

If you absolutely don't want to create an Unknown Langenbach as common parent you can always link Balser and Conrad to each other in the biography section. It won't show up in any of the Family-tree-and-tools displays but it makes the information public.
