A small success
Funeral notices in the early 20th century invited by name the attendance of friends and relatives of the bereaved. The coincidence of several family surnames has led me to uncover one elusive relative, and confirmed ongoing relationships.
My great grandfather Michael Carter (Carter-14124) had two children with his first wife Alice Whelan, John Edward? 1875 and Catherine 1877. I am descended from his second wife Sarah, nee Grooms. I was unaware of the first family when I started doing family history, and have wondered if there was any contact with the children of the first family after Michael died.
The death notices for Sadie Merriman (nee Carter Sydney Morning Herald 3/9/1926) include Mrs Jack (a common nickname for John) Carter and Elsie and Leslie (daughter and sister, they are also mentioned in BB postcards Byrne-2122), Sarah Carter and family, (grandaughter, cousin) sister and aunt of Norman Carter plus others. This has led me to find the children of the elusive John Carter, and provides evidence that he had an ongoing relationship with Sarah, as she is listed as Sadie's grandmother.
My next line of inquiry is to check if this gives me evidence of MC parent's names. There are now many Elsies and Irenes. The children are:
