I would like to join a specific protected project, but I don't see any info about how to do that. Any suggestions?

This is my first post. I want to join a protected project (Parminter-1), but I have not found the correct method for doing that. How do you find a list of everyone on a project?

This person is of special interest to me. He is a key link to many older ancestors which I would like to contribute.

Opening this tile highlights the many projects that exist on Wikitree. Exploring these will be reveal the aim & objectives of each project, its leader/s and the members that have joined the project. The opportunity will exist for you to seek project membership. That is an open profile, so you may add contributions to the profile such as sources, biography, and supported data. If you are making a substantial change, you should collaborate with others by posting your information on the public bulletin board of the profile.  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project_protection

I see that you have done that concerning the spelling of the surname and the merge.  That's great!  I do not know about this person's surname, but the Puritan Great Migration project will probably use the name the person used himself (Parminter) and list other spellings in the Other Last Names field.

I have a family surname that was spelled many different ways, sometimes in the same generation, sometimes by the same person.   In these cases, we use the name the person was born with and used themselves. http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Name_Field_Guidelines

Concerning your suggested merge Parmenter-146 and Parminter-1 are not the same person.  They should not be merged.  Perhaps you meant Parmenter-156?  That is already set as an unmerged match.  Hopefully, someone is researching the merge.

Thanks. You are right about Parmenter-146; I meant Parmenter-156.

I think my initial question shows some confusion on my part. I understand that their are projects one can join, such as the Great Puritan Migration project (of which I have interest). I was confusing this with a profile that is a Protected Profile, Parmenter-1. I have made many contributions to Parmenter-156 (unprotected), but not added these to Parmenter-1 (the same person, but protected).

I have a great interest in this person since he is a direct ancestor of mine. Furthermore, the identity of his wife is uncertain. Her identity could link me to William the Conqueror and Charlemagne! So I have been worked at identifying the primary sources which might settle this question.

It seems that the proper course for a Protected Profile is to simply contact the manager directly, since there isn't necessarily a formal project.

I think you might be confusing Projects, with Project Protection, and Privacy.

Projects are just groups of people who work on related profiles within the scope of their project. Sometimes, they want to lock down certain characteristics of the profile to protect them from being changed. This is where Project Protection comes in.

It locks down a couple of items, but not a lot, so that the profile stays somewhat intact. LNAB, Merging, The WikiTree ID #, and parents, for example.

And Privacy generally reflects whether or not you can edit a profile. Open privacy means anyone can edit the profile (with any specific Project Protection restrictions, if applicable), but higher level privacy restrictions mean you need to be on the trusted list in order to edit.

I'm not sure if this helps answer what you're looking for, but hopefully it is at least some good information related to how these things work together.
