What is the process for being assigned a mentor?

I have only been here a short time, and am really excited about finding this place. I've clicked all the links and read posts until my eyes are ready to bleed, but I can't seem to find an answer.  Is a new member automatically assigned to a mentor, or does one have to request this?

Is it really supposed to be just a trial and error process? Is there a cheat sheet for newbies, or maybe something like formatting for dummies? (maybe the more PC term would be formatting challenged!)  I find myself in this category. The more I read, the more lost and overwhelmed I seem to be.

I've been adding profiles, and editing those I am allowed to without hearing any screaming from others yet.  Does that mean I'm getting some of it done correctly?   I really want to be able to add and share, but would like for my contributions to be done correctly.  Suggestions, complaints, help anyone?

Thanks, Karen

Hey Karen and Welcome to WikiTree!

There are some good links I can give you for getting started on WikiTree - If these are the culprit pages making your eyes bleed I apologize.

Here's a page full of quick reference's used by our greeters, but I think it has something for us all.

Mentors are not "assigned" to new members but a Mentor will be leaving a message on your profile offering help - you can scoop them up from that post if you want to. If you would like to contact a Mentor there is a link for that in the drop down menus at the top right of every page. > Help > Contact a Mentor.

Throw them a message and they will be very happy to help you.

Thanks for the answer Mags.  I will try the quick reference and see if it makes a little more sense now. Sorry about the eye comment.  Just too much reading at one time for me.
No apologies needed - I think mine bled a little when I fist started obsessing over our big ole shared tree..:-) Mags

Don't forget to look at the built-in cheat-sheet on the left hand side as you're editing.  I'ts useful for cut and paste and getting ideas.  I spent a lot of time reading the help index pages when I was starting out.  And pick some of the people here who hve been around and had lots of experience and drill down to the profiles they're worked on and see what they look at.  there is a distinction made between large and small profiles.  The large ones where there's much material available typically have tables of content to make it easier to find what you're looking for.  Also adding things lie photos in the bios are possible and there are directions in the Help pages and of course you can ask here in g2g and people will likely come around to help you.  You may get more help if you ask such questions in the style section since busy people may not monitor the entire g2g board.

Thanks Dave.  I'll try the suggestion about looking at others pages.  The more examples the better for me.

Karen --

To add to all the great information you've already been given, I'll give you the Help page for Editing Tips.

Also, you've found the absolutely best tool for help, and that's G2G! :-) If you have a question about anything, please never be shy to ask about it out here. Of course, you can also search the forum to see if someone has already asked about what you're having trouble with.

Welcome to WikiTree!!

My favorite saying for people getting started on WikiTree:

"How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!"

Have fun, and please don't feel like anyone is expecting you to do any more than you have time for! :-)
