Moses Cleaveland/Cleveland's name is causing confusion and duplicates

+11 votes
There are a number of duplicate profiles for Moses Cleveland/Cleaveland and his descendants.

We've been trying to sort out the Cleaveland/Cleveland ancestors and having two different spellings has made it more difficult than usual to keep from creating duplicates. Can we work together to sort out those duplicates?

Before any of us assume that one of his descendants isn't on WikiTree and needs a new profile, we should look to see if that person is already here, just with a different spelling. Whichever spelling we choose for a Cleaveland/Cleveland profile it would be a good idea to list the other one in the 'Other Last Names' field, to help with searches.

Thanks everyone for working together on this family!

As I read this, I want to reiterate the point about putting alternate spellings into the other last name field. It is the only way we're going to prevent the creation of alternate spelling profiles in the future.
Hi Kay -- thanks for this message. I just came across a duplicate for Moses's son Issac too, so the problem may run through the line. Thanks to you and the active profile managers for all your work! I just today stumbled up to Moses in one of my branches and was excited to see all that has been done.

One suggestion I have for the sources under Moses's profile is to list the two volumes of the "The Geneaology of the Cleveland and Cleveland Families" separately (the current link looks like it is to Vol I at Hathi Trust). I will try to update that... it does not seem like a significant change needing discussion under project protected but I am not sure.

Another suggestion is to consider including the alternate spelling "Moyses." Maybe that has been discussed long ago. I have not seen this name referred to with the alternative spelling anyplace other than the book I reference above, so perhaps not a big deal.
I would like to point out that my research into the Cleveland genology has found 17 Moses Clevelands. I am sure that there are more to be found.
I am also sure that there are more to be found. The dates of birth, marriage, children, etc are really important to read closely. There has been more than one instance where I found myself getting turned around! Good luck and I am sure the profile guardians for Moses Cleveland would appreciate any specific feedback you might have.

Holy Moses! That sounds frustrating.  Just sharing with everyone else that this is a Project Protected Profile and the situation Kay describes is one of the criteria needed for the PPP.

Thanks Kay for all your great work!
