I have an ancestor who is center stage in a love triangle. Mary Ann Foreman ID: Foreman-1118 married Albert Charles Godfrey in 1896. She already had 2 children which he may well be the father of, but their surname at birth was Foreman. Enter stage right Walter Duff. In the 1901 census he states that Mary Ann is his wife and her first 2 children now have a Duff surname. On that census they have a son..Walter Duff. However on searching for a birth certificate for said Walter he has the surname Duff Godfrey. On the 1911 census their offspring have the surname Duff but the twist is when birth certificates appear they have either Duff Godfrey or Godfrey Duff. From talking with another person who I found researching Mary Ann, it transpires that Godfrey would not give her a divorce so she lived with Duff but still cared for Godfrey as he had ill health. It was said she had to wait until he died before she could marry Duff, but the records show that she married Duff in 1930 and both men seemed to have died in 1939. So my dilemma is how to enter these children. Some have just Duff some have Duff Godfrey and some Godfrey Duff, and I have no idea if the first 2 children ever took the Godfrey surname prior to being shown as Duff. Any help to sort out this confusion would be greatly appreciated, (and would save some sanity).
