When did the Hetfield family break off from the Hatfield family?

I found entries in Civil War records for Alfred R Hetfield, also know as Alfred R Hatfield, and Thomas C. Hetfield, also known as Thomas C Hatfield. I was wondering if these two are the original split? The story that I've been told is that 2 brothers changed the "a" to an "e" to get away from the discord between the Hatfields and McCoys.

Hi Anonymous!

Have you thought about becoming a member of WikiTree (it's free) and creating profiles for these family members?

WikiTree profiles are usually one of the very first results to show up in searches like Google so they are a great way to make connections with other people researching the same person/line.

If you're interested in joining you could start here.

Just a suggestion! :)
