Any suggestions to help me rather than add everybody manually?

What program are you using to create the gedcom?
I exported it from Genes Reunited. It is quite large as I also did my present and ex husbands families on same tree.
Do they offer any ways to choose how many generation to include?  If not, do you have any genealogy software on your computer?
Unfortunately no and no. I also have Ancestry but don't know how to export a Gedcom

You may want to consider downloading a desktop genealogy software that will let you import a full gedcom and then export a smaller one.   I believe that Roots Magic 7 (free edition) has the ability to limit gedcom exports to a chosen number of generations and/or only direct descendants.  You can also exclude people with no last names or dates.

Thanks, I will give that a go tomorrow
Downloaded it but can only export full file - cant choose descendants on free version. Does anybody know how to export a file from Ancestry? Any more suggestions?

I just downloaded the free version and was able to do it just fine.  Import your gedcom, then go to

  1. File > Export
  2. In the "People to Export" dropdown, choose "Select From List"
  3. Find yourself in the list on the left, and click so your name is highlighted
  4. Click "Mark Group" and a menu should open.
  5. Choose "Ancestors of Highlighted Person"
  6. Choose the number of generations you want to export.  10 (the default) will probably get you back to people being born before 1700.
  7. Choose "Direct Ancestors Only" this will keep the initial import small and clean
  8. Click OK (the box will close)
  9. Click Ok again (the box will close)
  10. Click Ok again (the box will close) and the Save As dialog will open
  11. Save you .ged somewhere you can find it again.

You should be good to import!

Thanks for this - I saw select from list and thought I would have to click everybody....
Brilliant you are a star - thanks for all you help :)
