I would like to connect my profile with an established profile

Question

Olivier Charbonneau is a well documented individual that emigrated from France to Canada in 1659.  His descendants crossed the Detroit River and migrated all over Detroit and Macomb County Michigan.  He is the 8th great grand of my fathers.  How do I connect us?

Start with you. Add a profile for your parent who is the descendant of Olivier, then add a profile for the grandparent who is the descendant of Olivier, then add the great-grandparent etc. As you go double check to make sure the person you're adding isn't here already. If they are, you may discover cousins here at wikitree. Eventually you will "meet" a profile that is listed on Wikitree who is a descendant. I see he has six children listed at wikitree, I didn't check for his grandchildren etc. It is important to add sources for the information you add, things like birth certificates, death certificates, census information, wills, that prove relationships and facts.

At my local library is a set of 28 books written by a fellow old record diver and shirt-tail relative documenting the linage and history.  So, I have all the info I can get, just need to correctly build the tree.  Sigh, this will take me a bit, LOL

I really love old genealogies but I have found I need to recheck their facts against newly available sources, just to be on the safe side.

This one was extensively researched.  He has over 700 sources listed and it was self published in 1976. But yes, you need "official" sources as well.

Just because it "looks" to be well researched, check the original documents anyway.  I had a book like this that had my family in it.  When I checked several of the original wills that were quoted and cited in the book, I found that the author had not quoted the wills verbatim and had in fact OMITTED a number of things mentioned in the wills he cited that made the statements and facts he presented totally inaccurate.  Just because a book is published and list sources doesn't mean its totally accurate - always double check the records yourself.

I see you have the pre 1700 badge which may be useful. There are two Oliver Charbonneaus in the surname lists and one was b 1611 in France and one b b 1736 in Quebec; so you'll have to enter him yourself.  unless he's under another spelling of his last name.  Is he well enough known to have a bio on Wikipedia? if so you may want to start on him and work your way down.  Or if you have enough family lore you could work back as far as you can go and then see if you can find the line on Ancestry.com or FamilySearch or another site.Oops I see the 1659 was his immegration date.  So it could be the one b 1611 you want.  So you'll want to start there and see if there are additional generatons here.  If you end up with several generations missing,you'll to work out a plan of attack in filling the gap.

I was recently working on Charbonneaus and it's amazing how many varieties of spelling there are.  The original person I was looking for was called Sherbino!
