I am fairly new to this genealogy in the short time I have been doing this.  I have reached a barrier with trying to find out the parents of James William DeVaney b. apr 29 1840 ross county Ohio, d 12/21870 near Wichita Kansas apparently buffalo hunting and was shot and killed married to a Pheobe Chicken.   to continue on with my search.  my email is

Phoebe Chicken is misspelled.  She is my Great-Great Grandmother.  After her husband, James William DeVaney was accidentally killed on a buffalo hunt in western Kansas, she remarried a German immigrant, Charles Steffen.  He spoke only broken English.  Her eldest daughter, Annie DeVaney, was my Great  Grandmother, was sent to live with relatives because Charles Steffen was not keen on children.  On the bright side, Annie DeVaney was able to complete her high school education and was later a certified teacher.

James William DeVaney was my Great-Great-Great Grandfather.  He was born in Ross Co., Ohio  His mother's maiden name was Finley. He served in Co. "G: and on the commissary staff of the 50th Ill. Vol. infantry.  Also captain of 1st Alabama Vol Calvary (Union)  He had put his rifle on top of the chuck wagon when he was buffalo hunting in western Kansas.  His rifle fell off and accidentally discharged killing him.  He was buried along side the wagon trail in Kansas.
