there is no such ting as a "definitive" source list in Genealogy, there are however some good websites and some very bad ones, I try to cross reference several, I stay away from ancestry, there are just so many mistakes made there. You can try " the peerage"," fab pedigree", and "stirnet" Stirnet you have to pay for but if you can find one of your ancestors names there, it is well worth the investment. I am a littlle dubious about these gateway ancestors, I am not American, but if my Gx2 father, had have gone to America and not to Australia, I wouln't be on the list, to the best of my knowledge and research,( well at least on paper) I am descended from Charlemagne, this has taken me the best part of 30 years to unravel, I started off well before the wide spread usage of the internet. All my mother knew about our family was that we had Blue blood, well actually most of it is not, a lot of it is ordinary people making their way through life.
