My Heritage...

Question

So I'm over in the other place clicking on WikiTree icons, and it's asking me to sign up for a 14-day free trial.

And it is not making it at all clear that this is for MH, not for WikiTree.

Give them an inch...

It is for MyHeritage.

Why pay to use MyHeritage when you can use WikiTree for free and WikiTree is better?

In fact WikiTree's data (perhaps too much of it even) is public.  You don't even need to register as Mickey Mouse.

Well they aren't the first site to try to leverage free data.  But I think WikiTree is helping them do it.  That seems rather cheeky.

Sites like My Heritage and Ancestry are interested in making a profit, so they don't provide information indicating that some of their sources, like WikiTree and Find A Grave, can be accessed for free.  I wrote to Ancestry once and asked about their policy on informing people about this.  Their response was that they are providing a service (for a fee) that allows a user to search a huge number of sources at once, including free sources, and their customers are paying for this added convenience.

That's why I am no longer with ancestry, absolutely over the greed and floored by the FTM support being withdrawn at the end of this year. It was hard but I removed my tree in January. The withdrawals passed.

It is also why I am here. Wikitree being totally free to all, just as our ancestry should be. I hope in time more people catch onto this place. Maybe then the big corporations will have to pull their heads in.

I signed up for the year subscription with mtDNA test.  They got the charging the credit card part ok but I can't access their site and get no response from their support

 

I did get a response from support. First impression is that it is Ancestry lite.
