Should we delete merge public bulletin entries once completed?

+9 votes

On this profile is a public bulletin board entry that says:

  • Brame-39 and Brame-66 appear to represent the same person because: duplicated
But now that the merge is complete I would think it should be deleted, but when going to delete, the web page says:
  • You have the power to delete Andrea's message, but this power should be used very conservatively. Please do not delete unless it's spam, vandalism, or reveals private information.

Should we delete obsolete messages?  And if so, shouldn't that warning message be updated to say so, or if not, clarified to say don't delete obsolete messages?

There are two schools of thought here. Some like Mikey believe it's ok to delete those. Some believe that it's part of the history of the profile just like the changes tab. I don't delete them unless it's a duplicate message. I even read the whole bunch of them to see what's been going on with the profile, before I got to it. Sometimes I update mine to say. Suggestions completed or some such thing.

YES, most of the time it's fine and saves someone clicking on the other number just to be sent back to the same page.  But if you have one that seems important to save, leave it.

I think if a message is no longer timely, topical nor useful to preserve, then it should removed, I suspect this function has evolved over the yes from what it was originally used for. The error checkers use it a lot as it stops other people double contacting people but I wouldn't expect a profile manager to keep the message forever once the error is fixed.
