Just joined! Focusing on the Sharps of Southern New Jersey (US) line.

Question

Hello! I'm trying out Wiki Tree, as I've heard good things about it.  I've been working on my genealogy for a while now, and focus primarily on my own Sharp line.  My line hails from England->New Jersey->Ohio->Nebraska->Washington.

 

I'd love to get in contact with anyone else related to or working on Sharps in these areas :)

EDIT: There, I've added my patrilineal line as far back as I know, tying in with a couple of pre-existing Sharp records :) ( http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sharp-2690 )  I have lots more data on that whole family that I'll work on adding, when it isn't so late XD

Do you have a timeframe for your southern NJ Sharps, birth year, marriage year and death year? First names, counties and cities would be helpful to if you want to add to the info that you have.

Oh, right, yes.  I actually have a LOT of info on this line, via the excellent book "The Sharps of Southern New Jersey" and my work on Family Search and Ancestry finding records.  I'm still a little new to this site and the formatting, but my Sharp line is essentially as follows.

 

William Sharp of Floore, England, d 1690

>William Sharp, b 1670, England, emigrated to Burlington County, New Jersey in 1682 (with brothers John and Hugh), married Jemima Eastlack in 1695.

Hi Daniel,

Welcome to wikitree. I am sure you will find it as good as what you have already heard. Remember to enjoy what you are doing and if you hit a brick wall ask for help. There are many people here who have a wealth of knowledge and are always willing to help where they can. As far as I know I don't have anyone with your surname remotely connected with my family, but it will be interesting to see just how long it takes before our families connect.

Thanks for the welcome :)  I'll probably take a look at the GEDCOM import route at some point.  Much easier than adding everyone in manually.

Going the Gedcom route does seem an easier way, but to be honest I am still torn between that and manual additions. Uploading a gedcom takes a lot of preparation, checking and rechecking and then after import has been accepted a lot of clean up editing, because gedcom's include a lot of generated garbage.

If your gedcom is a large one I would suggest doing a small portion of it first, so you can get used to the way it works here.

I am still leaning towards manual additions, mainly because it does give opportunity to catch an error.

One way to do a quick check is to look here at all the Sharps, single page, order by birth year, and include those that have it as the current last name. This link should do it:

You can then search the page, or look at it in chronological order for some key people.

I see a *lot* of William Sharps. About 150 of them.

39 Isaac Sharps, but none born in 1799 in Ohio.

And a search of the page for "Marley" turned up nothing.

So my guess is, is that you will have a lot to contribute. But you never know if there will be other connections.

Yeah, I've done a little bit of searching and found a couple of records up at the very top, but with some of the misconceptions, confusions, and lack of information I've been seeing on Family Search as well.  So I look forward to adding sources and clearing things up :)

A fair number of people with the Sharpe surname in and near Yorkshire and London, England. Also, a number of Sharpes in Scotland. More in Perthshire before the clearances, than after the clearances.

Yeah, narrowing it down to WHICH Sharps in England has been the hardest part.  From Quaker records I've gotten back to the 1st Generation who bemigrated, and their father ( http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sharp-2690 ), but going beyond that has been difficult, and often relying on supposition and error.  And muddied by the fact that there are a LOT of William Sharps in England XD

There's an Ancestral File for Hanna Allyn Sharp. It traces her line back a few generations. This submission has not been checked for accuracy, so you may want to verify how valid it is. I don't know why her husband is not shown here.

Huh yeah that certainly looks like it might be her. Although I haven't been able to find any sources that back up the Hannah married to William Sharp in my line being an Allyn/Allen to begin with, just member-submitted info.  And the only source there is an Ancestry Tree someone made :/

 

Well that at least gives me names of potential parents to try looking for records for.  Unfortunately Williams and Hannahs are rather common in England, and I don't want to grab the wrong data by mistake XD

The town she lived in is shown as Flower, but in trying to find it, I found some flower shops instead. The town may be Floore, which is now spelled Flore. Maybe the town clerk or a genealogical group in the town or county could be a resource for your search.

Yeah Floore is the spelling I find in existence at present.

 

The record definitely looks like it is intended to be my Hannah, just without any sources/evidence included as to her parental relationships.

I connected your William Sharp to Jemima Estlack.

Daniel, we are tenth cousins!  Take a look at our forebear and your new favorite ancestor, Francis Estlack. He published an essay in which he raged against the injustice towards Quakers in Bermuda. It's worth a read, you get a sense of the man and the intensity of his era.

Thanks for doing that. I haven't had the time or mental energy to work more on this site, transferring over all the research and work I've done on Family Search to here. So while I have a more detailed tree, it's over there XD
