NotePad or WordPad both work.

Any text editor should do what you want it to do. I have tried most of the actual genealogy programs out there ans sources do not transfer properly from any of them when using another genealogy program or web site so even with the difficulties in reading a GEDCOM in a text editor they are still your best bet for what you want to do.

If you don't mind a kind of large download, you can use the free "Standard" version of Legacy:

The deluxe version just has more advanced features that aren't absolutely needed.

The problem with just using a text editor is it can get difficult to find which elements, like notes and marriages and sources, go with which individuals.
